If you’re thinking of having a baby, don’t get a puppy.  If you have a puppy, hold off on having a baby!  Don’t get me wrong - no scold here, and I’m being a bit playful in the process.  As many of you know, not every pregnancy is planned.  Whether or not this one was, I know the baby is the light of his parents’ life.  The thing is, before the baby, the Doberman pup/teenager was the light of their lives.

Now, with the baby, the Dober is understandably somewhat displaced, and while he’s a fabulously outstanding fellow in every other way, he’s having a hard time adapting to the new noisy, smelly, attention-grabbing bundle that is taking so much of his mom’s and dad’s time and attention, so in his miscomprehension, he’s feeling a bit peevish toward the baby at times.

Seeing this, mom and dad did the heart-wrenching-but-probably-necessary thing and have surrendered him to DRT for placing in a home without a baby.  Here’s how mom described it: “We’re looking to rehome due to us being uncomfortable with him around the baby.  He is a great dog and is good around our other (older) child, but the baby he is jealous of, I think.  I know your process is very thorough, and I just want to make sure he goes to the right home. I am nervous if I chose someone who didn‘t treat him right.”

The simple fact is, some dogs have a hard time adjusting to the introduction of a baby into the family.  Dandy, being young and lacking the understanding and wisdom of an older dog, was struggling.  I suspect that with more time he might have worked it out and come to love the new family member, but the parents did the wise thing in this instance.  He’ll very shortly be the loving and loyal member of a new family, and nothing lost in the process.

Carol says that he is a “Super nice Dobe with a great temperament - very strong on a leash, but does want to please.”

He knows to sit, lay down, sit/stay/eat on command, and as you can see from his pictures, he’s strikingly handsome, eagerly alert, engaged, and ready for anything.  My take on this young one is that with a little consistent guidance and training, he’ll finish off in the next few months into as fine an example of our beloved breed as one could desire.

Observations from our volunteers:
“Dandy is a great dog with tremendous potential. He‘s young with a lot of energy, but with a sweet disposition. He already knows to “Sit and “Down,” and he loves to fetch a ball. He‘s friendly and likes to be with people. He is definitely a handsome ‘diamond in the rough.’”

“I got to meet Dandy this weekend and can highly him - he’s a Doberman that even the pickiest adopters will love. He has good size, not too big or too small. He is young but not wild. He has beautifully cropped ears. He loves playing ball but is not obsessed with it. He even likes water! He seems to be socialized, well mannered, and friendly. I was able to walk in and see him despite no prior introduction.  He has a great personality and is a leaner when getting attention. I can keep going but obviously this guy is a special Dobe and won‘t be around long!”

You know the sequence: apply, acceptance, appointment, arrive, acquaint, away.  If you’re at all serious about adopting, don’t delay - this one isn’t going to be with us long enough to get settled here!
