This wonderful senior couple came to us from a wonderful home where they had been loved and well cared for over many years. Their former mom explains that unfortunately they have had to move, and their new location cannot accommodate their canine children. As a result, the dogs have been staying with a gracious friend temporarily, while their humans have been trying urgently but unsuccessfully find a solution. Thankfully, someone told them about DRT, and they reached out. The dogs are safely with us now while they await a new home.

Carol says “This is a very sweet senior pair,” and she expresses our intense, collective hope that heart strings will be tugged in a family that can give them a loving home once again.

Their former mom says that Yankee has a lot of energy and loved to run around their fenced backyard for at least 20 minutes a day. He also loves to play with other dogs. He takes his responsibility to his family seriously, and will alert under the usual circumstances such as a doorbell ring or a knock, the sounds of people walking past the house, etc., but he responds to touch or voice command to quiet him. He isn‘t interested much in toys, but he loves to chase and play tag. He also especially likes something he can chew and gnaw at for a long time.

Doodle’s favorite game is “Where‘s your ball?" And her favorite toys are balls, Chuck-it balls, and tug ropes.

Their former mom says that “They both respond to the following commands: Sit; Come here; Snack; Beep Beep (Squeaky toy - Doodles); Paw; Go Home; Food/Hungry?; What is this!? (While pointing); Down/Lay Down; Potty; Who’s there?! (Bark); OFF!; Up Up (On couch); Go Pee (Doodles); Go get your ball; BAD!; and NO!”

Observations from our volunteers:
“It’s difficult to provide separate comments for this pair of beautiful dogs, because they are so much alike. They’re a couple of the sweetest, loving Dobes you will encounter. Yankee (male) might seem a bit more affectionate at first. He loves to give kisses! Doodle (female) likes to back her rear end between your legs so that you can pet her sides and rub her ears. I took both of them to one of the remote fields to survey some storm damage, and they were glad to tag along. I took one of the Chuck-It balls with me, and they love to chase after the ball! Doodle came up with the ball more often than not. As we got into the farthest field, they roamed around together, exploring all the new sights and smells. When it was time to go back to Elijah’s House, all I had to do was call to them and they both came trotting over to go back to the building. I don’t believe you could find a better pair of sweethearts!”

“Their names say it all! What a dandy pair they are. Settled, playful, and definitely don‘t show their age. Walking out in the field with them, they were observant and playful but, kept coming back to me for love and attention. After exploring, Doodle stayed with me and watched Yankee chase a rabbit across the field. She looked up at me as if to say, “Boys will be boys” and leaned against me for some love and pets. Yankee soon was by our side for his attention and pets. They are both very polite and stayed close. What a great pair - well behaved and want to be close but still observant and enjoy exploring their surroundings. I can‘t say enough good things about them. If I didn‘t have a pair at home, I‘d take them home with me.”

“What a great duo! We see it all the time where one is a little more happy-go-lucky (Yankee) and the other is a little more reserved (Doodle). Yankee is very friendly and really helps put Doodle at ease when meeting new people. Doodle is shy but definitely not in a problematic way. Doodle definitely came up to me and checked me out. The difference is just the visible level of trust at the introduction. Meanwhile, Yankee has never met a stranger. He has more of an "I‘m up for anything" attitude. Doodle is still playful and definitely loves the "Chuck-It" toy where you are essentially throwing a ball for her to chase down. Yankee and Doodle are definitely good for each other and it is easy to notice the level of love between them. They take care of each other, need each other, and get along very well. This includes entertaining each other and just being content hanging out because they have a companion to minimize the keep their interest and meet their need for attention. Managing two Dobermans can be more of a challenge than some might want to undertake; however, these two make the task easier because of how they take care of each other. These two just want a family to fit in with and they will provide a high level of happiness to make it worth it!”

Two senior Dobers - on the face of it, it may seem daunting. That having been said, they’re in excellent health, still very active, and the fact that they get along so well together actually takes some of the necessity off their owners due to their entertaining and caring for one another. In this regard, it’s not out of place to say that two can actually be easier to care for than one.

Give them a look and some serious consideration. You really won’t find a better matched pair of companions to welcome into your home and hearts. You know the routine: apply, acceptance, appointment, arrive, acquaint, away. What’s holding you back?
