What a terrific fellow Kerry is - handsome, well formed, great coat, enthusiastic but not overbearing - a stellar example of our favorite breed.

Here’s the story of how he came to us, as told by his former human:
“I adopted Kerry in Oct ‘25 from a gentleman who was experiencing severe health complications. Since that time, my situation has unfortunately changed drastically (separation from husband). I‘ve relocated to a small house on a busy road with no outdoor space. I love this dog, but I feel I am doing him a great disservice. Being in a new, undesirable location coupled with being a full-time graduate student and working full-time, I do not have the time to devote to him since becoming a single and trying to navigate life on my own. I feel terrible about everything that has happened, but I believe the best love I can show him is to see that he will have a new home where he is happy and able to run and play as he used to. I do not want to surrender him to any place that I feel would not serve him well, this is why I have reached out to you. I‘ve done research on your organization and I appreciate what you do.”

And here are observations from our volunteers:
“My first attempt to meet Kerry was frustrating, because he was much more interested in what the other dogs were doing than with me. Carol told me the trick with him was to go equipped with treats, and wow, what a difference that made! I was his new best friend as soon as he got a whiff of the treats in my hand. I found out that he responded to “Sit” and “Down,” too. After the treats, we started playing tug-o-war with a Jolly Ball. He wore me out, but he was just getting warmed up; he is one strong fellow. I guess between the treats and the Jolly Ball, he decided I was okay and came over to me without enticement later on.”

"Kerry is one of my favorite Dobes currently staying at the DRT resort. He is young and still has some extra exuberance, but not anything out of the ordinary for someone with Doberman experience. He is very well trained on a leash and doesn‘t pull despite his strength. He loves the Jolly Ball as well, so there are plenty of opportunities to bond with him while providing him with an outlet for his energy. He is confident but friendly upon introduction; I went in to see him by myself with no issues - he simply brought me his ball to play.  He‘s a great companion, easy to love, and brings smiles and joy."

There it is - we see variations on this story time and time again, but that’s why we’re here, and we’re glad of it!  If you have a heart and home for this outstanding Dober, follow the sequence:  apply, acceptance, appointment, arrive, acquaint, away; and restore him to a loving home as he so richly deserves.
