I’m a strong believer in and supporter of the military, but if you’ve served, you know there are some things that are arbitrary and don’t make sense.
Due to one of those nonsensical (in my opinion), arbitrary rules, Ricardo came to us from a military family that has had him since a pup. Here’s how his former owner describes it: “A new military base policy banned the breed, and we can’t take him with us due to that. They’ve labeled his breed aggressive, and they won’t tolerate or grandfather in him even though we had him before the ban.” Sir, yes Sir.
So now he is with us as he awaits a new, non-military family. He’s a handsome fellow - alert, eager, interested, and agreeable.
His former owner adds this comment about his on-leash behavior around other dogs: “He’s reactive when he’s on the leash and sees another dog. He will try to lunge and bark at it. He was never that way before he got attacked at a dog park by two other dogs. I socialized him when he was a puppy around multiple dogs, but this incident with the dog attack is what caused him to be reactive. We got training for him, but so far it didn’t seem to help enough.”
Carol adds this: “He‘s a very obedient Dobe -- does what you ask of him. He walks nicely on a leash and only barks at other dogs if they bark at him first. He’s very loving towards his humans and is a handsome dude, for sure.”
Regarding other dogs, it may be that he’s returning to center on this with time and change in circumstances.
Observations from our volunteers:
“I only got to meet Ricardo for a brief moment, but he took a treat from my hand so gently. And he accepted a few strokes to his head from me, a stranger, with such a hopeful look on his face. I look forward to meeting him again.”
“Ricardo is a sleek looking and handsome Doberman. He does well on a leash although he is quite a sniffer when on a walk. He has a nice temperament around people, but will surprise you with a little bit of spunk when his neighbors get chatty with him - nothing bad at all - he just comes across as super chill, so it was a little surprising when he barked back. No red flags with Ricardo for me.”
"This is the perfect package for someone looking for a male Dobe. In addition to his striking face and profile, he is well mannered and knows some basic commands. He was pretty affectionate too. He’s one of those dogs that you’d be hard pressed to find fault with."
So, if you’re looking for a “super chill” Doberman, Ricardo may be the one. If you have any further questions or need more info, email Carol. Otherwise, just follow the usual sequence: apply, acceptance, appointment, arrive, acquaint, away. |
