How sweet is this lovely, petite, senior Dobergirl! She had lived with one owner for her entire life, and he passed away a few weeks ago. Since then, she had been depressed and would not eat. There were no family members that were able or willing to take her. An elderly neighbor tried, but the dog was more than she could handle, and she thought it best to humanely euthanize her. She also said the dog was leaking at night time on her bed. The vet took her in and tried to find a home or a rescue that was willing to take her, but nothing was immediately available, and in her depression at the loss of her human and abrupt change in circumstances, she continued losing weight. Upon learning about her, we agreed to take her immediately, thinking she’d be a “pass through” to a family who recently lost their senior Dober. But they weren’t yet ready for another, so now she‘s here at DRT until she finds her forever home. She has arthritis, but thankfully the related pain is easily resolved with Gabapentin. As you can see from her pictures, she‘s now romping around the exercise fields and enjoying life again. We also learned that she had a UTI and likely that was the reason for her leaking at nighttime. That will be resolved with a round of antibiotics. She‘s very clean and neat never messing her blankets or bedding to make a nest, as some will do. Her appetite has returned, and she’ll likely soon be putting on some weight again. We were told by the vet staff that her owner was in the habit of giving her a slice of bologna every day! We haven‘t done that, but she does enjoy either a half of chicken or steak biscuit broken up into her food in the morning. She walks nicely on a leash, is good with the cat, and is overall a nice, easygoing Dobergal.
Observations from our volunteers: “This petite girl was in an outside run when I walked up. I could see right off that she was curious about me and seemed ready to meet me. All the same, she approached me cautiously, which I can appreciate given the circumstances that led her to DRT. She finally came close enough for me to start petting her, and she relaxed. One of the first things I noticed about her was this cute cowlick on the back of her neck. She seems to be a pretty gentle girl with plenty of energy for a 9 1/2 year old Dobe.”
“Despite her maturity and wisdom, Azurine absolutely does not look her age. We see a number of senior dobes come through, and Azurine looks as good as any that I have come across in the 5 years I have been volunteering. She is very "soft" with her interactions with me, which makes our relationship very easy. I do think she has not quite unleashed her full personality yet, but it is clear this girl is a sweetheart and a mindful companion."
All this sweet, gentle girl needs is to be in a loving, nurturing home once again. She looks and behaves years younger than the numbers say, and it’s clear she an outstanding companion. If you think your home may be a match, apply, acceptance, appointment, arrive, acquaint, away. That’s all there is to it. |
