We’re especially pleased to have received this sweet Dobergirl recently.  She’s been through some very difficult times, and we are just glad she’s with us now as we continue to bring her back to proper weight and give her the love and attention she was so sorely lacking.

She came to us after having been rescued from a horrible situation.  Here’s how animal control describes things:
“She was seized on January 13th by Animal Control for being cruelly mistreated.  She was being starved at her previous home, and she was so severely underweight that we transferred her to Carolina Veterinary Specialist to assist us with her treatment. They placed her on a three-times-a day-feeding schedule, but she still always seems to be hungry and seeks out food. The great things is, she’s not aggressive - just motivated about food finding! When food isn’t her first thought she likes to chase a ball Sometimes she brings it back and sometimes she doesn’t, but the fun is watching her happily bounce across the yard to get it and joyfully turn around to see your reaction!  On intake, she was an outrageous 44.5lbs. Thankfully, she’s heartworm negative and is now up to date on her vaccines.”

The good news is, she’s gained about ten pounds so far, and despite what she’s been through, she seems entirely unphased - the past being the past - her new reality being one of kindness, good food, and companionship.  We’re finding her to be a gentle, loving, sweet girl despite all that’s happened to her before.

Observations from our volunteers:
“What a special girl! I say that given what a great personality she has and given the circumstances that brought her to DRT. Curio came from a background of neglect and unfavorable treatment. You’d never know that, given how playful and gentle she is. I spent most of my time getting to know her in her inside run. She greeted me freely without any shyness or fear. As soon as I sat down, she came beside me and rolled over on her back, inviting me to rub her belly and chest. After a while of getting to know each other, we started playing tug-o-war with a knotted rope toy. You could tell how happy she was with our playing and the attention I was giving her. Every once in a while, she’d hear a noise or sense some movement and jump up to see what was going on in the other runs; once satisfied, she’d come back over and roll over on her back or start grabbing at the rope toy. She’s great!”

That’s a remarkable picture of a dog who was obviously so neglected and mistreated before.  This is one grateful Dober, and she’s sure to be a loving companion for years to come.  If you think your home may be a match, make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved, and come see for yourself what an impressive girl she is.  You won’t be disappointed.
