This is just crazy. This lovely, petite Dobergirl came to us from a shelter; that’s not the crazy part. She had been abandoned inside a house when her former not-really-humans moved away and left her behind! Somehow she was found before serious harm came to her, but it just makes my blood boil to think of anyone doing such an intentionally inhumane thing - really NO excuse.
The important thing is that she’s now at DRT, where she is loved, well fed and watered, sleeps on a comfortable bed, has toys to play with, gets plenty of exercise, and enjoys lots of loving companionship. It’s a happy situation for her now as she awaits a proper, forever home.
You can see the indignity of what she has experienced in her face still, but beneath that is the sweet-sweet girl that she is; she’s learning about love and friendship and trust and companionship, and she’s liking it!
Comments from our volunteers: “When I first met Myrrh, it was bark, bark, bark. But when I went it to the Pup Tent (she was on restricted activity after having just been spayed she didn’t back away, and she let me approach her slowly. Later on, I spent quite a bit of time in her inside and she really relaxed and was completely comfortable with me. She was doing all the typical Dobie things like leaning into me and lying down on my lap, and after a bit she started to initiate some gentle playing with me.”
“Today I met Myrrh, and I’m so happy to report that the expression on her face is much better than in the pictures from her first days at Elijah‘s House. Today I‘m looking at a Dobe who is interested in what‘s going on around her. She‘s still trying to figure it out, there‘s a lot of wonderment, but she‘s engaged with life. Treats are a big draw and help to break the ice. And she really seems to enjoy being scratched between her shoulder blades. This little girl is going to make it just fine.”
And this delightful bit from Carol: “Myrrh has a Doberman grin as big as Texas! She shows a happy, smiling mouthful of white teeth upon greeting you in the morning!”
In the Bible, myrrh is spoken of as a rare, valuable, aromatic substance that was used for incense and perfumes. It also serves medicinal purposes. Myrrh can be thought of as something that soothes and has healing qualities. It is also named as one of the gifts, along with gold and frankincense, presented by the Wise Men to the baby Jesus: “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2:11, KJV).”
My thinking is that if you choose to make Myrrh part of your family this Christmas season, the blessings will flow both ways.
