He came to us from people who took him temporarily while a friend moved to a new residence.  Here’s how they describe things: “He was only suppose to stay with us for a short amount of time until previous owner moved into new home and could take him.  The owner then moved into the new home and decided he no longer wanted the dog.  We were basically stuck with him, as a result.  I have tried everything I know to try to keep him safe, but he continues to get out of the enclosure we keep him in.  (If you saw where he was kept, you’d understand why he wanted out. eds.)  He gets along fine with my dog, but my dog doesn’t get along with him at all.  I have tried to find him a home through people I know, and no one can take him.  He’s such a good, sweet, baby, and I just want to make sure he finds a good home that can handle his needs and love him and care for him.  He obeys when told to sit, lie down, stay, sing, and shake.  He also sings!  He loves to play fetch and hide-and-seek, and he loves to run away from you and play catch him.  His favorite toys are balls with a rope and Frisbees.”

My last Dober came to me after he was abandoned in a similar manner by his former owner.  I just don’t get some people.  If a person wants a Doberman in the first place and goes to the trouble and expense to get him and keep him for several years, whatever possesses that person to just abandon the dog?  Shaking my head as I type.  And this dog is exceptional besides - an outstanding fellow with a terrific attitude - just wanting to be loved and played with and cuddled with.  All I can say is, he’s a terrific opportunity for someone who actually does want a wonderful dog for life, and that’s why we’re here.

He was kept in a dog pen 24/7 by the kind-but-unable-to-keep-him friends and, unsurprisingly, he has heart worms.  Our regular readers know the treatment for that is both risky and very expensive.  Please consider donating to our heart worm treatment fund.  You literally will be saving a life, if you do.  UPDATE: The good news is, his heart worm treatment has been completed and now it’s rest and recuperation for three weeks until he will be able to go to a new home.

Observations from our volunteers:

“My first impressions of Pernod are just what a great dog he is.  I know he’s big and beautiful, but he has a great personality and if there was such a thing, he’d be a dog’s dog. Victor and I took him to the Middle Field this afternoon, and boy did he have a great time running around. When Carol joined us she brought some treats with her, and Pernod was showing off a bit, sitting when asked and giving Carol a high five.”

"Pernod is my personal favorite kind of Dobe: a big, friendly, good looking boy who‘s just happy to be alive and happy to be with you. He‘s an enthusiastic, good buddy."

"Pernod is another gentle giant to come through DRT.  He‘s strikingly handsome and has a great personality.  Being both warm- and kind-hearted, he is very easy to bond with.  He checks all the right boxes for Dobermans and will no doubt become someone‘s all-time favorite."

This is one, big, full-of-goodwill fellow who is just waiting for a loving and interactive home.  If you think yours is a match, make an appointment to meet him after your application is approved, and come put the squeeze on him.  You’ll be glad, if you do.
