Sometimes we rescue dogs again when their adopters can no longer keep them for one reason or another. Such is the case with this sturdy, handsome fellow after being in his adoptive home for about a year and a half.

He had originally come to us via the courtesy of Rescue Angels. They brought him to us from a shelter where he had ended up after having been running loose and struck by a car. Thankfully, the injuries were not life-threatening, and overall he was none the worse for it. Now, he has been returned due to the fact that the health of his human parents has been declining, and they can no longer care for him in the manner he deserves.

Here’s how his mom describes him and their circumstances:
“We both have suffered setbacks in our health that prevent us from continuing to manage him properly. He’s very prey driven, and we are no longer able to walk him safely. (I was used to walking 4 miles a day.) He knows to sit, down, stay, and ‘Here.‘

He knows a few tricks such as to play dead, shake hands (either paw) and circle. He also knows to circle the length of the garage, around chairs in the middle, as many times as asked to do so, in order to get water, grass, etc. off his feet. He will even get into the bath tub on his own when I ask him to. His favorite game is fetch, he loves soft, squeaky toys, and he doesn’t destroy them.

He doesn’t mind when I trim his nails with a Dremel tool. He is the most loving, sweet dog anyone could want. He just wants all the love you can give him. He even loves everyone on first meeting them. He doesn‘t really bark unless is senses there is something he feels is amiss. He especially loves his banana dog chips as his last treat before bed and will go through all the commands he knows for one.”

On the topic of having a strong prey drive, this is very common across breeds.  At times I’ve had the most loving, loyal, otherwise-reliable dogs with no flaws whatsoever that would charge off in an instant at anything that moved.  Sometimes they were just curious; other times they wanted to stop it from moving, if you take my meaning.

My current Dober is hot to chase.  I don’t know if he’d kill something if he caught it (I think not), but if it moves, he must go after it.  That having been said, we regularly have deer and turkeys, sometimes coyotes, bobcats, and rabbits in our back field.  Initially, he was hot to chase them.  But with proper training and guidance, he’s to the point now where, when I let him out yesterday and he flushed a flock of turkeys, he broke and returned on command to me.  That’s huge progress.  Don’t be put off by a dog with a prey drive.  Training and management make all the difference.

Volunteer observations:
“Speyburn is super friendly and is just very relaxed around people. He really wants to be around people and will talk to you to let you know! He’s very lovable and a little bit cute/goofy. He is a favorite among us volunteers, and that is a testament to all his great qualities. He seems to be a Dobe that wants to be a helper and wants a job. Training him should be fun as he is smart and receptive. Would I adopt him if I could? That’s a definite yes!

“Speyburn is a great looking red male with a solid build - a nice boy with a laid-back personality. He seems to be comfortable in his own skin. He has learned some tricks, so there is a willingness to be trained and obedient. He enjoys running around and being playful where his personality can be on full display. He has some of that ‘helper’ personality, where he wants to feel like he is contributing - a real pleaser!”

Everything about this fellow shows him to be a well-balanced, intelligent, engaged-and-interested Dober, eager for companionship and interaction with his human. If you think he may be a fit for your home and family, make an appointment to meet him once your application is approved, and come spend some time observing and interacting with him. There’ll be no disappointments if you do.
