Jambalaya originally came to us more than four years ago. She had been left at a shelter to be euthanized after being struck by a vehicle and seeming to be paralyzed. Thankfully, the folks at the shelter decided to wait and see, so they put her on meds and let her rest. Wonderfully, after a day or so she stood up and began walking again.

Rescue Angels then took her in and cared for her, taking her for an MRI and paying for it themselves.  The MRI showed that a disc had been pushed out of line and was swollen due to the impact of the vehicle strike. With the swelling reduced, she was able to walk again.  They delivered her to DRT, where she was subsequently adopted by a loving family with whom she has spent the past four-plus years.

The trouble is, there’s a toddler in the house now, and he was using her as a training ladder to stand up and steady himself to walk!  He‘s scaring her by grabbing onto her skin and coat to stand up. (I‘d be growling at him too!)  As a result, her family decided to return her to DRT for placement in a home where she’ll not be challenged by a child that is too young to know any better.  That having been said, she‘s still a beautiful girl with a lovely, joyful personality.

Her former owner provided the following information upon her return:
“She knows to sit, stay, lie down, and speak on command.  She has a high activity level, and she loves to play fetch and tug of war.   She has a high prey drive and loves to hunt for lizards.   Her favorite toys include anything she is able to chew successfully without destroying immediately, multiple types of balls, thick rope, and chew toys.”

Observations from our volunteers:
“Jambalaya is wonderfully happy and playful, craves attention, and loves to get any treats you‘re willing to part with.  She loves to play with the Jolly ball and will run for it, chase, it and play with it all by herself.  She loves to be hugged on and gives kisses back. She‘ll follow you around the fields as you‘re working."

“Jambalaya is a beautiful red Dobie. Upon meeting her the first time she was a little barky, but I quickly realized that she just wanted attention. She was very welcoming as I approached, and she got excited because she knew she was about to get my undivided attention. She quickly settled down for me and was quite content lying on my lap, soaking up the love.”

“During my brief meeting with Jambalaya this past weekend I found her to be eager to meet me, and we stopped a couple of times as I was taking her to Ivory’s Coast to let her sniff me and let me rub her ears. She seems to be a happy, easygoing Dobe.”

“Jambalaya is another great guest at the DRT hotel.  She’s a beautiful dog with good manners!  She has the spirit and vitality of a younger Dobe - lots of good energy. She loves to play with the jolly ball and does well on the leash. From what I’ve observed, she could keep up with an adventurer or be a willing participant cuddled up on the sofa.”

Recently, her former owner added this plaintive description and appeal:
“Where do I even start when trying to describe this angel of a Dobie? This girl has the biggest heart, and she stole mine the minute I met her at DRT 4.5 years ago. She was playing with her toy, shaking it next to me and trying to entice me with it. What a happy girl, despite the rough road she had before meeting her. Over the last 4.5 years she gave me unlimited unconditional love that made my heart feel like it was spilling over at times. Lying down at home, whether it was the couch or my bed, she always had her head in my lap or was cuddled up next to me. Coming home, she would always be at the door with her little tail wagging, jumping up and down with a big smile on her face. Every one of my friends and family members always complimented on how much of a great dog she was. She has the same energy she did when I first adopted her. She and I have been through so much together. Protecting me and my family always took priority for her, as Dobermans sometimes do. I always felt safe walking late at night or staying in my home alone with her by my side. I never imagined our time together would have to be cut short, and that I would have to make this type of decision. But I know it was the best thing for both my son and for her, as well. My heart aches every single day not having her with me, and I will be grieving this loss for a long time. I pray every single day that she finds a loving home that will take her in and care for her the way she deserves for her remaining years. Please do not look past this girl for having to be returned. She is the sweetest and most caring dog I have ever come across. I know that she will fill a hole present in your family and heart, while simultaneously filling one in hers too.”

As you can see, this beautiful senior Dober has a lot to offer to a loving family.  If you think she may be a match for you, make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved, and come spend a little time with her in person.  I‘m guessing that whether or not you live on the bayou, Jambalaya will satisfy your dog-loving hunger – no crawfish pie or filet gumbo needed.
