This oversized senior Dober is just a lovely fellow.  Don’t let his age or sober look put you off.  There’s a lot going on behind that poker face, and he’s full of good will and interest in interaction.

He came to us from a home where he was well loved, but with the addition of a baby, their circumstances have changed.  Here’s how his former mom describes it:
“Because of our recent life changes with having a baby, we are no longer able to give Templeton the quality of life and love he deserves. He is a sweet dog without a mean bone in his body, and he just wants to be loved and played with. I just simply don’t have time now, and it breaks my heart. Right now he just sleeps and lies around all day. When I do interact with him, it’s just constantly trying to keep him away from the baby because he loves to steal the baby’s things and destroy them. He actually ate two pacifiers, and I’m so glad he was able to pass them without going to the vet! Nowadays he doesn’t get to go outside unless it’s to go potty. After an active life until recently, I don’t want him to go through his senior years being miserable and cast to the side. He deserves to be able to run outside, play, explore, and be loved on like he used to be.”

“He knows to come, wait, stay, back up, sit, lay down, and ‘up’ on command.  He loves playing tug of war, but really just wants you to hold the toy while he mouths it; it’s kind of a ‘being close’ sort of thing.  He loves any stuffed animal made out of Sherpa material. He also loves his comfort blanket, and he’ll suckle himself to sleep with it.  He loves to be outside. He loves to explore and hunt whatever moves - bugs, lizards, and the occasional small animal if he is lucky.  The ideal environment for him would be one with lots of yard to explore.”

He quickly has proven to be a favorite with our volunteers.  Here’s what they have to say about him:
“AKA the Gentle Giant! This is one big boy with a gentle heart and nature to go with it. When you first meet him you’re struck with just how big a boy he is, and it might come as a surprise as to how sweet a guy he is. I got a chance to walk him later in the day, and although he kept the leash taut, he was never pulling me. When we came back down the driveway, he got quite excited to see a visitor (potential adopter) who was leaving. I guess they had met earlier and he was happy to see them again.”

“If there was ever a ‘gentle giant’ it would certainly be Templeton. He’s so docile and well mannered - just an easygoing Dobe. The big guy is definitely a staff favorite, as he loves giving soft kisses. He does not discriminate between a butt rub and a chest rub; he will gladly let you choose! He’s not really a barker, and he’s not really concerned with the other Dobes. This guy just has a way to make you gravitate towards him, and he will steal your heart before you know it!”

And Carol adds these observations:
“Templeton is quite a dude! Everyone loves this Dobe. He is easy to walk on leash, comes when called, and is an over-all love bug with all of us. If we didn‘t all have too many personal Dobes in our homes, we‘d be fighting over who could adopt him first!”

“He is a counter surfer though, and I don‘t think this is out of hunger. He is so tall that his head is way above the height of the counter. One of our volunteers brought tenderloin biscuits for all the volunteers and this guy took the bag off and enjoyed one for himself! I told him that I was taking away his title of ‘the perfect Dobe’ after he did that!”

“He’s active for his age, too. He loves to run and play tug with the Jolly Ball. We‘re working on trying to get him to release it so we can throw it again. He’s so good with other dogs that I wish I could clone him. Oh, and he plays hide and seek with the cat in the kennel!  It’s comical to see him interact that way.”

If you’re not beating down the door to get this one, you must not really want a Dober!  Apply, approved, appointment, arrive, acquaint, away!”
