Wow - this fellow makes my heart go pit-a-pat! What a handsome fellow he is! He came to us from a couple who fostered him for their niece.
Here’s their part of the back story:
“Our niece worked in the US Embassy in Kuwait. Chivas belonged to a soldier who was unexpectedly deployed, so she took him. When she was preparing to return stateside, she raised money to bring him with her so he would not be left in a Kuwait shelter. She already owns a very large German Shepherd and couldn’t keep him herself, so we agreed to foster him as we looked for a good, permanent home. We live on 2.5 acres with four rescue dogs already! We would love to keep him too, but he’s just a teenager, we are in our late 70s, and we would not want him to have to be re-homed should something happen to us. It is easier for him to go to another home now, while he’s young.” He is very smart and quick in learning to our way of home life. He can be easily trained with food. He would follow us throughout the house and lie at our feet at the computer or the kitchen table. He definitely is a lap dog and enjoys the comfort of a couch. He gives great slurpy kisses. If we were younger, he would have stayed with us forever.”
The niece also shared some additional information about him: “I was posted there at the U.S. Embassy. Chivas‘s Dad was a young Kuwaiti Army officer who loved him very much, but was sent on deployment, and didn‘t have plans in place for Chivas. Love is important in pet ownership, but it isn’t always enough, unfortunately. I happily had him as part of my family for 10 months in Kuwait and struggled to find him a local family to adopt him. When my tour ended in July 2023, we still had no adopter, so my aunt and uncle decided to foster him until a permanent home could be found. They are the definition of animal lovers, and he’s been very happy with them. We are all praying he finds his perfect, loving, forever home. He loves to cuddle and be petted; he is extremely snugly; he thinks he can be a lap dog; he loves to play and run; he chews his bed but not his blankets; and he loves his toys. I know someone will fall in love with him just as I did.”
Observations from our volunteers: “I met Chivas for just a few minutes today. He impressed me by how quickly he would obey the command to sit in order to get a treat - bright boy. I wonder how many other commands he knows? It will be interesting to find out. His coat is a very dark red – lovely. And he has a broad head, which I absolutely love on Dobes. It just feels so good when you pet them.”
“What a happy, eager guy this is! Our first meeting was when I was asked to take him to Ivory’s Coast. He was happy to meet me and even happier to take advantage to stretch his legs, so I got a leash and took him for a walk. He’s a strong boy and did pretty well on the walk, but I’d suggest doing a little leash work, especially for an older person like myself. He has a great personality, and you’ll love those soulful eyes of his.”
Run, don’t walk, through the process of applying, getting accepted, making an appointment, and coming to get him. He’ll be going home with the lucky family who gets here first, I’m sure!
