This beautiful, young Dobergirl has an outstanding face and an interested-and-engaging personality. She’s clearly been bred, and whoever posted her ears needs a talking to, but she’s a terrific girl all the same.
She came to us from a home where she was loved, but I get the impression she grew to be larger than anyone had expected. As a result, she lived outside day and night. Mind you, she had an air-conditioned doghouse with an automatic watering system, so she wasn’t suffering any with her physical comforts and needs, but as we know, these dogs thrive on companionship, and having to live outside, no matter the comforts, is no solution.
Here’s what her former human said about her: “I am turning her in because she is too big to be in our house and has to stay outside all day. I have gotten more busy with work, so I am gone really early and return home late. As a result, I only have limited time to spend with her. She’s too big for my wife to walk her, so I am the only one that can handle walking her. She deserves to be with someone with more space and who can tend to her more often. She knows to sit, down, and give paw on command.”
She has a high prey drive and will enthusiastically rid the yard of birds, squirrels, and other small varmints. One of my Dobers was especially adept in this area, on two occasions actually snatching a bird out of the air as it flew too close!
Carol says that despite her size and static-photo appeal, she‘s truly a loving Doberman who shows better in person than in pictures and who thoroughly loves people. Her over-nursed teats are not the most attractive thing in the world, but you do have to look past that because it is not her fault that her greedy former owners bred her to make money for themselves. Her ears are a terrible crop that wasn‘t managed properly, but again, this is no fault of hers. On the plus side, she has trimmed up considerably since coming to DRT and being able to run the fields and exercise more.
Observations from our volunteers:
“I walked with her yesterday, and she was pretty good on the leash. She listened to me when telling her to stop or when turning around. She does like to pull a little; however, she is a very sweet girl and seemed to want to play with the other Dobe on the walk.”
“This girl could have been named Breezy because her ear flop looks like a breeze is always blowing over her head!”
“Makoto is one of those Dobes that is just so easy to have feelings for. First glance shows you she’s been over bred for her young age. Regardless, she is very sweet, active, and playful, and she has a really great disposition and temperament. She is smart and well socialized too. It amazes me how resilient these Dobes can be, and Makoto is definitely one.”
"After spending time with this lovely Dobergirl this morning I couldn’t help but wonder how a dog who looks as though she hasn’t had the easiest life could be so darn sweet and well adjusted. She just looks a bit like a refugee from a puppy mill, but is one of the sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet. When she comes in to your face and gives you the gentlest, eager kisses (and you just met her), you know this is a gem of a dog!"
“I had the privilege of working with Makoto. She likes to lead, but once we worked a little and she began to trust and respect me, she was very responsive. She is like a scout and is constantly checking out her surroundings. Once she realizes you are on the other end of the leash and the leader of the pack, she begins to respond well. She really loves to please and is extremely sweet; she just needs a job so she can please you. I think she would be very good at scent and tracking work. It would give her a chance to utilize that scouting instinct and please at the same time. She is a great girl and just needs a little direction and purpose. I think she‘d be a great companion for someone who likes the outdoors and would also cuddle with you at home or by a campfire.”
I have to add that despite the modest visual detractors, this girl has a beautiful serene, intelligent face. Look past the teats and ears - there’s a deeply attractive Dober there who is even more charming in her personality and demeanor. There will be no disappointments with this lovely girl for the family wise enough to adopt her. If you think your home may be a fit, make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved, and come meet her and spend time with her in person. She’ll put a smile on your face and a soft spot in your heart, for sure.
