This handsome senior Dober with the glossy coat came to us from a loving home where he has been since a pup. He’s been well loved and well cared for all the years since, but with the changes in their lives, caring for him properly became increasingly more difficult.
Ultimately, with the introduction of a new baby into the family circle and the disruption to routine that inevitably results, he had a hard time adapting and apparently started looking to the baby (not unreasonably) as the cause of the change. The parents decided the best thing under the circumstances was for him to be placed in a new home where he could adapt to their routine and not feel pushed aside by a tiny human, so he has come to us as he awaits a new home.
His former mom says that he “loves his naps and cuddle time in between his active outdoor time. He has a lot of energy and enjoys chasing birds (doesn’t catch them), playing ball, and going on walks get his energy out."
She told us that "he knows to sit, stay, lie down, up, down, and come on command. He loves playing with any type of ball, but the large green “chuck it” balls are his favorite. He also loves bones, such as large Benebone or anything stuffed with a squeaker inside."
Volunteer observations: “When you first see Skibbereen, you’ll be struck by just how tall this boy is; he has some long legs! He also has a personality that goes along with his size - big, bright, and friendly. He’s a really playful guy who wants to play keep away with the large ball Carol gave him. I was shocked when Carol told me that he was 7, I would have guessed 3 or 4 at the most. When I had a chance to take him for a long walk, I was impressed with just how well he did on the leash. I have to say he was one of the best Dobes I’ve walked in all my years of volunteering at DRT!”
“The first day I met Skibbereen, he greeted me exuberantly at the gate to the field and again as we got seated. He then ran to find the Jolly Ball and did his best to entice me to play. Although his definition of play didn’t usually include giving the ball up, he was very respectful of my hands as we played together with the tug. Carol was amazed, because up until that day Skibbereen had only acted sad and whined a little due to missing his previous owners. But this day, it was if a switch had been thrown and he was ready to enjoy life again. I don’t know who was happier about that, Skibbereen or Carol!”
