Crockett and Tubbs are the last two of the four litter mates whose mom is Highland (separate profile). All of them were abandoned by their owner at his mother’s place. (God bless longsuffering parents, and a pox on irresponsible adult children.) Now, thankfully, pups and mom alike have come under our care as they await new, proper homes.

Carols says “They‘ve been living outside with a dog house for cover, and they are loving the big bed and blankets inside at Elijah’s House! They‘re filled with parasites and very thin. They weren’t very socialized, but they are opening up nicely with the help of treats.”  Now, with proper medical care, plenty of good food, and loving time and attention, they’re coming along fabulously.  And in their short time with us so far, Crockett is already coming up to our volunteers for quick pets and doggy licks.

These handsome fellows haven’t had much of a life to this point, but they’re young and adaptable, and there’s no doubt they’re going to make wonderful companions for whoever decides to take either or both to be part of their family.  All are available separately or mix and match, so to speak.

Neither pup knows what a leash is and at this point will buck, scream, and holler if tried to walk. Poor Tubbs has gone through the most. He got loose at the vet’s and ran off. It took us hours to find him, searching in a huge thunder-and-lightning, pouring-rain storm. At this point, he is truly traumatized and will only come near a few of us. Tender, gentle care is in order for both these pups as they become socialized and mature into confident adults over the next few months. They show every promise of becoming excellent companions as they do.

Observations from our volunteers:
“Crockett and Tubbs make you wonder what sort of environment they came from. They’re both generally healthy, handsome Dobes who seem to have no experience with human interaction. Crockett is ever so slightly more apt to come close enough to sniff you. Tubbs likes to keep his distance. I don’t think it is fear, I think they never experienced people who wanted to be around them. I sat with Crockett in his inside run, and he just sat in the corner as I’d talk to him and pet him. I was hoping he’d eventfully feel comfortable enough to lie down. That didn’t happen, but he did stand up and move towards the front of the kennel. I took this as a little progress. Neither of these brothers shows any sign of aggressiveness; they just seem to have no idea what normal human-dog interaction is. Both were easily picked up and carried to their runs as they are not yet leash trained.”

“Tubbs is quite the looker - a beautiful, blue Doberman.  However, he’s has been through a lot, and we’re working hard to earn his trust. At the moment, he is very hesitant to engage. He is young and in new surroundings, so it can often take longer for some new residents to acclimate. He is a very sensitive Dobe, which makes adapting to his new situation more difficult but will ultimately make him the most loyal of pets. When you see him, it just makes you want to work with him and comfort him. All the volunteers have a special place in their heart for Tubbs and can‘t wait to see him blossom!”

“I do love me some Crockett! He is a skinny little guy with a lot of curiosity. He hasn‘t been socialized very well, but you can just see him coming out of his shell and warming up to his new volunteer family. He absolutely wants to bond with people and is so close to throwing his caution to the wind. He is young and will be a super companion when he finally does (which I think will be very soon). He loves being loved on, and it totally paralyzes him to where he won‘t move a muscle in hopes of making the moment last.”

If you’d like to make one or more part of your family, make an appointment to meet them once your application is approved, and come check them out. You can’t go wrong with any of them, and each will be thrilled to be enjoying the comforts of a loving home and living inside for the first time.
