The pictures of this handsome fellow pretty well tell you everything you need to know about what he is like - intelligent, engaged, active, responsive.  He loves to interact with humans and is just soaking up the attention he’s receiving here at Elijah’s House.

He came to us from a shelter that had picked him up as a stray.  Marks on his neck from a collar and injury to his mouth made it apparent he had been tied out for a long time and had finally chewed his way loose and left.  Who could blame him?  Now he’s safely with us as he awaits a new, proper home with a family that will make him a house dog and never tie him out again.

Despite his past neglect, he’s extremely friendly and takes treats gently.  This fellow just soaks up attention.  His good nature has a lot of catching up to do now that he is around people who care about him, and he’ll no doubt be a loving, devoted companion for many years to come.

Volunteer observations:
“I’m not sure, but Ardbeg must translate to “big lap dog” in some unknown language!  Seriously, this boy just loves to be close to you and, as is normal for so many Dobes he is a true Velcro dog. I spent about 10-15 minutes with him in the corral today, and he left my side twice (for about 20 seconds each time) to check out a passing dog. As quickly as he left to check out one of his neighbors, he was back in front of me with his head between my legs looking up with a big smile. He hs a great personality!”

“Ardbeg is one of those Dobes that seems to have an "old soul" about him. He isn‘t old, but he is very sweet and is somewhat delicate (for a Doberman) in his interactions. He loves attention, and he can be quite a talker if you ignore him. He has a strong desire to be included and enjoys just being with people. He is a follower when you walk around the fields, which tells me he wants to be a helper. His pictures show what a beautiful dog he is, with a dark mahogany color that really shines in the sunlight. Everything about him says “loyal companion and best friend.”

“Ardbeg has high aspirations to be a lapdog, but he’s just too much Doberman to fit! As soon as I sat on the outdoor bench, he hopped up on the bench beside me and snuggled as close as he could. But he’s a big guy and the bench wasn’t wide enough so he slid his front half onto my lap. And that still wasn’t enough room so he gave up and dropped off, but then leaned in for all the petting I would give. Something he was successful at was being responsive to the slip lead. I appreciate that so much in any dog but especially in a large, strong Dobe. He’s a pretty laid back guy.”

“As we entered the fields at DRT, Ardbeg immediately came over to introduce himself. We noticed right away that he was a sweet, goofy, and gentle old soul. He was excited to spend time with us, but he also explored all the fields we visited while at DRT. He may need to revisit his manners with jumping, but nothing that a little love and attention can’t fix. He is a self-entertained boy and found a fun ball to carry around in every field we visited. Ardbeg is such a sweet boy and would be a wonderful addition to someone’s family.”

And Carol adds this gem of a description:
"This guy craves attention and will try to hang on to you when you leave his exercise field.  He is still a gentle soul though, and looks at you longingly, begging for more pets."

Clearly this is an outstanding fellow who will make an equally outstanding companion, so make an appointment to meet him once your application is approved, and make a space for him in your vehicle; you won’t want to leave without him!
