What a beauty this Dobergirl is! I love those tall, ears that stand up perfectly. With a nicely-formed head and a stately carriage and demeanor, she really is impressive. For my eye, I’d like to see her lose a few pounds, but some exercise and walks would take care of that.

She came to us from a home where she was loved and cared for in the main. Unfortunately, her determination to terrorize the cats and to protect her property resulted in her being cooped up most of the time. Additionally, her human seemed to have less and less time to spend with her. He finally made the decision to surrender her for placement in a home without cats and a yard where delivery people and people walking by wouldn’t get the “Dober surprise” when they stopped at or walked by the yard.

Her human shared these comments regarding her:
“She will not stop trying to get after my cats that I‘ve had for years no matter what I do. She will push the pet gate down to get in by the cats, yet only truly barks when she sees them. She spends too much time in her crate due to my schedule and not trusting her to be loose in the home with the cats. The poor dog deserves way more attention and freedom than I can possibly give her. She’s a sweet, loving dog who just wants to cuddle on the couch or recliner with me - a Velcro dog. She also likes to be outside with her human but doesn’t want to be left outside alone for long periods. I have taught her the following commands: ‘Sit, lay, down, stay, no, come, go, and crate.’ And as for toys, she loves them all, especially if they squeak or have peanut butter inside!”

Starting out here at Elijah’s House, she seems comfortably independent. She likes attention but doesn‘t crave it. I suspect she’ll want more snuggling and interaction once she knows the routine here. (Note the content of the volunteer observations for proof of that!)

Volunteer observations:
“I only got to spend a couple of minutes with Ballechin this past weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised at how she approached me in the playground as I was going to work. When I first arrived, she appeared to be a little uneasy with the volunteers she hadn’t met yet, so I didn’t pay any attention to her. Well, as I was halfway into the playground, all of a sudden here she comes wagging her tail. So I sat down and she got between my legs as I was petting her. Next thing I know she gave me a quick kiss too! About 10-15 minutes later as I was walking around, I called her name and she came running right up to me from the far side of the playground.”

“Ballechin is a Dobergirl who has really made a great impression on me. I must admit, she was a little vocal of her territory when I first tried to introduce myself, but when a familiar volunteer introduced us, she immediately took the social cues from the volunteer to understand that I was a friend. She went from barking at me to giving me kisses within less than a minute. Not kidding - less than 1 minute. I took her for a walk and was excited to see that she has been well trained on a leash. Like all Dobes she likes to be out front, but she doesn‘t pull, and there was always a bit of slack in the leash. She wants to be loved and she wants to be a helper. She seems to have that drive to want to have a job to do so she will feel needed. She already has good manners and will definitely be a loyal companion!”

This Dobergirl is ready for a new home. If you think yours is a match, make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved, and come see for yourself what a treasure she is. She may not be a Single Malt Skotch, but she’s sure to soothe your spirit all the same.
