Some people see our beloved Dobermans as baby factories - a means to enrich their coffers at the expense of the dog’s peace and happiness.
Dolyna is one. Even at her young age, she’s been bred time and again. We learned that her last litter was 14 pups! In addition, she’s had no health care, no shots, no heart worm preventative - in short, she’s been used up and thrown away. It makes us all crazy, but we just have to grit our teeth and keep doing what we do to improve the lots and lives of all the dogs that come to us. It is why we exist, after all.
Unsurprisingly, she’s heart worm positive, along with intestinal worms. Our regular readers are well familiar with our pleas for extra support when it comes to heartworm treatments, both dangerous and very costly. “Dolyna is one of those dogs that likes to be close to you. I took her out in the corral, and as soon as I took her off the lead she trotted over to the gate, sniffed around, and promptly came back to me and took up a position between my legs as if to say, “You can start stroking my head and back now.” Every once in a while she’d turn her head back and let me kiss her nose.”
All Dobers are appreciative of attention, but it seems that the ones who have been over bred especially appreciate kind treatment and attention. They’re used to being a commodity rather than a family member, and it gives them great peace to be treated with love and kindness. Dolyna is a prime example, and as such, she’ll surely make a loving companion for years to come, now that her breeding days are over.
