Kaniv (Ukrainian city name) came to us with Lubny from a broken home where the mom ended up with the dogs and the husband stopped helping financially. Mom understandably couldn’t afford their care any longer, so they were surrendered. They apparently had been living outside in kennels and were very happy to be able to run free in our large exercise fields. Both Dobers also fluff up their blankets and bedding inside, making a huge nest for themselves. They had quite a barnyard odor to them when they arrived, but good baths took care of that, and now they’re contentedly awaiting new homes.
She had a benign mammary tumor when she arrived, but she’s healing nicely and doing well following surgery to remove it. Thankfully, her breeding days are over and she can enjoy the rest of her life as a loving pet and companion to someone. She had been imported from Belarus, Ukraine, as a pup, at considerable expense. The quality of her breeding is apparent in both her appearance and her disposition, and she’s a great dog all around.
Volunteer comments: ‘When I met Kaniv, I got the impression that this was a dog who hadn’t had a lot of close contact with people. It was her wariness that made me feel she may have spent most of her life as a possession kept in a dog kennel instead of a true member of a loving family. It was just that she didn’t seem to be used to people being nice to her and wanting to interact with her. However, what I thought was shyness has turned out to be a dignified reserve, and she is responding most appreciatively to all the attention and love she’s receiving. This is a great lady and a loving companion.”
“Kaniv thinks she is a lap dog. I sat on the bench in the corral, and she climbed into my lap and gave me a sloppy wet kiss in my ear. She made it quite clear to me by pushing her chest against my hand, that I was supposed to rub her chest, which obviously made her feel good. She then relaxed and put all of her weight on my lap. This is a heavy girl to say the least! She is hungry for affection and is a totally loving dog in response.”
I don’t see how you could do any better than this. If you’re of the same mind, make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved, and come spend a bit of time observing and interacting with her. You know what’s going to happen if you do!
