Our senior Dober Kherson (another nod to Ukraine) was a clear case of neglect.  He came to us from a shelter, courtesy of a Rescue Angel, and it was obvious he hadn’t had any proper care in a while.  He’d been living outside, his ears were all bitten up by insects, he had wounds on his neck and legs, and he was very thin.  He also had two benign tumors (now removed), further indicating that just hadn’t had any proper care in a long time.  There’s more.

While he was perfect for his exam and resulting treatments at the vet‘s office, he also had intestinal worms and heart worms and needed to be treated for those.  It’s always a sad, frustrating thing to see a dog who has been neglected and is suffering as a result. Thankfully, the intestinal worms were quickly and easily cleared up, the wounds are healing nicely, and his heart will soon be free of the deadly heart worms.

As our regular readers know, heartworm treatment is both risky and very expensive.  The significant additional cost for treatment puts a very real strain on our budget.  If you are moved by his story and would like to help with the cost of his treatment and we prepare him for adoption to a proper home and good life, we’d welcome your donations toward that end.

He’s a good-sized, senior Dober who’s ready for some certainty in his life. He’s gentle and quietly eager for loving, nurturing interaction with a reliable human in a good home.

Volunteer comments:
“I took Kherson for a nice walk today. He was great on the leash! He walked at my pace (slow) the whole time and seemed just happy to be out exploring. He struck me as a pretty laid back guy who appreciated the attention I was giving him.”

“Kherson is just a well-mannered fellow.   He is friendly and was gentle with his introduction to me - not timid, but under control.  He was definitely appreciative that I was giving him attention and was easy to please. He didn’t bark excessively. Overall he’s a laid-back guy that is very easy to like and who seems to be low maintenance.”

“This big boy (Kherson) is a love bug! He’s easy to lead on leash and just wants kindness and love. And he does the Doberman lean as he‘s led outside!”

"This is one handsome boy whose cropped ears are somehow missing the very tips. This doesn’t distract from his sweet personality in the least. While in the Corral he would position himself between my legs as I was sitting and tilt his head down so I could gently rub his ears. It seems as if he likes to lay down under the trees just through the gate going into the Girl’s Field. I left the Corral twice and each time when I came back that is where I found him. It may be a bit cooler there and the ground is covered with decayed cedar and probably made a nice bed, or perhaps it is a sign of living outside."

This is a fellow who has apparently seen the worse side of life for years. He wants nothing more than to be in a loving, caring, nurturing home with humans who will engage with him and treat him as he deserves. If your heart responds to him, make an appointment to meet and spend some time with him. Better yet, take him home with you. Both dog and human will be blessed if you do.
