Dear Whimsi is back with us after 14 months in her adoptive home. Despite best intentions and desires, not every home proves to be a good match for a dog, and that seems to be the case in this instance. Nothing stands out as a reason for her return, but her adoptive mom just got to the point where having a dog wasn’t working, so she is back with us as she awaits a new home.
She was quite stressed when her owner dropped her off, and she kept looking up the driveway where she saw the car leave without her. She seems bewildered not knowing exactly what she did wrong to be abandoned. (This sort of thing is often so hard on a gentle-natured dog.) Fortunately, she is warming up to all the volunteers and, unsurprisingly, only wants to be close to her humans.
Comments from her former owner:
“Worked with a trainer on sit, stay and general manners; loves long walks and the dog park - very social with other dogs; impulsive leash pulling at times; not an excessive barker. Will alert to someone at the door. Overall, she is a great dog and very friendly and sweet. She is well mannered, will sit for her food. Loves to chew her toys and cuddle on her bed.”And Mama Carol adds,
“Whimsi is truly a gem here -- doesn‘t bark at other dogs at all.”And from one of our volunteers:
“I found Whimsi to be initially cautious when I went into her run, but she fairly quickly responded to my gentle rubbing of her ears and talking to her. Whatever the reason for her initial shyness, she quickly perked up and relaxed. As soon as I’d pause my touching, she’d look up as if to say ‘Don‘t stop now!‘"Her original profile follows. You can see she’s a good girl in need of a loving home. Perhaps yours will be the one!
This pretty little Dobergirl (we call her "Whimsi") came to us from a home where the husband had left and the mom was in dire straits. Separation and divorce are always hard on the “kids,” and despite her whimsical name, she’s understandably a bit tentative for now when meeting people who are new to her. She very quickly warms up, however, and then happily gives little baby kisses.
Unfortunately, even at her young age, she‘s been bred multiple times. That‘ll never happen again.
Her former mom says she’s active and loves to play fetch, her favorite toy being a ball.
Volunteer comments:
"Well, I might have finally made a friend with this shy and reserved little girl. Our initial meeting last week got off to a rough start when I startled her while opening the gate to the corral. She took off with a yelp as though I’d poured boiling water on her! After I sat down, she eventually came within about 10 feet of me but looked like she was ready to dart at any second.
"This week got off to a much better start. As all the volunteers were gathered in the courtyard, and Whim was going back and forth to the people she knew while still warily keeping a safe distance from me. I sat down on one of the benches and, lo and behold. she cautiously crept up to sniff me. After a few moments, I moved my hand slowly to scratch her ears. That must have struck a chord with her, because her tail began to wag. After that, I was “In like Flint,” and as she bounced from one person to another, she would always come back for more ear rubs."
"This sweet young Dober‘s experience in life prior to coming to DRT was less than ideal. When she arrived, she was quite skittish and shy. She takes a bit of time to warm up but is open and loving once a little trust is established. She is a happy girl and is good on a leash, so she’ll be a great walking companion. She is a sensitive girl who will blossom once she’s living in a home where she recieves consistent, loving care."
"Whimsi is the sweetest little lady! We unfortunately didn‘t get to spend too much time with her, but she was incredibly sweet. She definitely took some time to decide to approach us, but once she decided to come over, she was very gentle! She strikes me as a dog that might take some time to warm up to you but that will give you all the love in the world once she does."
From everything we can see, she’s just a sweet little girl that is eager to please, full of love and playfulness, and who just needs the certainty, love, and support of a new and stable home.
If you think your family may be a fit, make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved, and come spend a little time interacting with her. She’s sure to please.
