What do you do when a breeder sells a Doberman puppy to a 76-year-old woman?  God bless her for her interest in and desire for a Dober; we all understand that.  And bless her for giving it a try.  But I can’t think of a time when a person at that point in life should try to manage the upbringing of a Doberman puppy, cold turkey, so to speak.  And in my somewhat informed opinion, a proper breeder should have guided her toward an already-trained or mature dog that would provide the companionship without the challenges associated with raising a rambunctious puppy.

Not surprisingly, he was too much to handle for this dear lady despite her best efforts and intentions.  She sent him to a trainer who used an E-collar on him and she also tried it for a while, but E-collars are too often a short cut that avoids proper training and end up leaving a dog either broken or more uncontrollable than before.

Thankfully this handsome fellow isn’t broken, but he has not learned proper obedience yet and as a result was just too rough with this lady, trying to play with her as though she were another dog, and understandably that was more than she could or ought to have to manage.  This is not a bad dog, and this is not an untrainable or out-of-control dog.  It’s a dog who has not learned proper limits but is still intelligent and eager and who listens when properly spoken to and directed.

Even the most obedient Dobers can, on rare occasions, let their enthusiasm get ahead of good judgment.  When that happens, the owner must be prepared to gently, clearly, and consistently hold the line with him.  Sometimes it takes seemingly endless repetitions to set the desired pattern of obedience if a dog is particularly strong willed.  But with regular affirmation and praise with the correct response, a dog will come around and be a happier pet and better companion as a result.

This Dober is an excellent fellow who needs to learn his proper place.  That is not taught by short cuts or heavy-handedness.  It comes from consistent, patient, sometimes seemingly-endless repetition, reinforcement, and reward.  These dogs live to be in harmony with and please their masters, and love, properly and consistently administered, will guide them into their full potential.  Any shortcuts or harsh, aggressive methods are a disservice to the dog and result in unhappiness for all.

Not surprisingly, this fellow has a lot of energy.  He loves to play with other dogs and is quite friendly, but he can get a little rough with the smaller dogs.  He runs like the wind and has a lot of fun doing it.  He loves to play with toys, and he loves snuggling into his bed and blankets at night time.  We think he’d probably be good with a younger cat.  He only wants to play, but one thud from one of his massive paws would squash a senior cat who might not be able to get out of the way fast enough.

He has a beautiful coat and beautiful body conformation.  He loves to have his chest rubbed, and it seems to have a calming effect on him. He clearly appreciates it and willl give small kisses on your cheek when you do this.

Volunteer comments:
“This fellow reminds me of my Dobie.  He was really excited to see me and had to give me a hug and lots of kisses.  I sat with him for a while and realized he is a little wilder than my young one.  :) I think it's just pent up energy.  He was alternating between bouncing all over in his inside run and lying nicely while I was in with him.”

"Marlin is a truly handsome Dobe with a darker mask and rich rust highlights. While you will never tire looking at him, your joy will spring from being with him. He's got a beautiful balance of activity, affection and alertness.   To see him run is pure pleasure, Dobie "art in motion."  Marlin really loves his walks and is very responsive to your signals and directions. He is a smart Dobe. At times, he will stop for some rubbing and bonding, then will give you hugs and kisses for your affections. He loves to see what's going on, what's making that sound, and what's that smelling so good.  Marlin is a "wonderdog" and someone is going to be lucky enough to share their life with him."

"I thought he was a lot of fun to be around, likes toys, to be petted. He's an explorer checking out every nook and cranny. He's like the typical teen ager though. Needs some basic training, teach him not jump up, pull on the leash ect.. Lots of energy. Remids me of one of those figet spinners."

“Marlin checks ALL the boxes - good looks, young, healthy, friendly, good with other dogs, energetic, happy, and affectionate.  He is everything a Dober should be!  After I met Marlin, I asked my wife if I could have another Doberman.  She said "No.”  You better come get him before I convince her to change her mind!”

"This big boy is young and active and very playful! Likes to jump but that’s easily corrected in a respectful way. Then he will come and lean up for love and a neck rub!
Super dog!"

The short of it is, this is an outstanding bit of raw material just waiting for a capable owner who can complete his proper training and help him to mature into the amazing adult he will soon be.  If you think he may be a fit for your home and abilities, make an appointment to meet him once your application is approved, and come spend some time observing and interacting with him. You’re going to want to take him home, so just be sure you’re prepared to give him the love, guidance, and attention he needs to become your best dog ever.
