His name is Doc, but life's been no holiday.  He's nine years old and has lived in a dog pen most of his life.  (Channeling Billy Jack here [obscure but meaningful reference].)

Three years ago the guy who owned him left him with his brother (who lived with their mother three miles down the road) and never came back for him.  Thankfully the brother recently started dating a woman with a big heart who "encouraged" him to let Doc and another dog go to homes better suited to their needs.  As a result, Doc has come to us and will live out the remainder of his years in a real home with real family and all the love and attention he so thoroughly deserves and never had.

It should be no surprise that he has heart worm - those invasive, slow-killing, deadly parasites that cost many hundreds of dollars to eradicate.  If you are moved to donate toward Doc's treatment, it will be a life-saving action on your part.  Other than that and his being a bit overweight due to lack of exercise, he's in good health and actually does not look his age.

The best thing about him though is his open, interested, trusting face and attitude.  This is a dog who apparently never knew anything of friendship and care beyond his daily feedings.  Being free to run in the fields and explore and to be made of to his heart's content are entirely new experiences and very well appreciated.  This fellow had made his peace with the only type of "life" available to him, but now he sees there is so much more, and he's a very grateful dog with an open heart and a lifetime of stored-up love to share.

Volunteer comments:
"Doc likes you to rub on him; he's happy to engage and really laid back.  He wants to meet the other dogs and seems really sociable."

"Doc is a super sweet older Dobie.  Given his heartbreaking story, it's surprising to see him as such a social creature.  He has an engaging personality and is looking at life through a whole new lens.  He has a sweet sense of curiosity and excitement, as he is getting to do some normal dog stuff for the first time.  Taking walks, getting intentional affection from people, socializing with other dogs - these are all new for Doc.  He's like a kid in a candy store with his new life at DRT, and he doesn't even realize it'll get even better when he finds his new forever home!  You won't find a more appreciative rescue dog than Doc!"

"Doc is your quintessential sweet senior Dobie, and he is beyond grateful to be roaming through fields and getting lots of attention and love!  He is so goofy and cute - what’s not to love?  Doc is definitely a Velcro Dobie, so snuggles will never be scarce with this guy!"

I realize most of our potential adopters look for a younger dog, but here's an opportunity to give a full life to an old dog who never had one before.  In the years he has remaining he's going to be a total delight, and I don't think you could find a more appreciative and loving companion.

If you think your home and heart are a match, make an appointment to meet him once your application is approved, and come prepared to take this large lover boy home with you when you leave.
